Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
Therma-Tru door installation in Orlando typically runs $950 to $2,400 fully installed, depending on whether we’re hanging a new slab in an existing frame or pulling the rough opening back to studs and building it out fresh. Most slab swaps happen same-day once we confirm the hinge pattern and swing. Owners usually call us after a door that worked fine for a decade suddenly starts dragging on the threshold during the wet season, or after a hinge side gaps enough to whistle during afternoon storms off Lake Apopka.
We’re Westlight Windows Orlando, an independently owned and operated Kingswell location. We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we stock their hinge hardware, weatherstrip profiles, sill pans, and astragals because half of Central Florida already has a Therma-Tru door in the frame and just needs it working like new again.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
We install across the Therma-Tru line: Classic-Craft, Smooth-Star, Pulse, and the newer Benchmark fiberglass series. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss is that Therma-Tru changed their hinge prep on fiberglass slabs around 2016. Pre-2016 Smooth-Star doors used a 4″ x 4″ hinge with a radius corner; the 2016-and-newer slabs use an adjustable-style hinge mounted on a reinforced block inside the stile. If you order the wrong era of hardware, the screws will feel like they bite, then strip out within six months. We check this before we ever cut a box.
How to identify what you have: open the door and look at the hinge leaf screws on the jamb side. If the top screw is backed by metal threads visible in the jamb, it’s the newer adjustable block. If the screw just threads into fiberglass or wood, it’s the older prep. Also note the stamp on the hinge leaf: Therma-Tru OEM hinges are marked with a ‘TT’ followed by a three-digit code. Aftermarket hinges of equal gauge work fine, but we default to OEM where the door sees direct east or west sun exposure, because the powder coat on aftermarket hinges fades unevenly in Florida’s UV.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing
- Dragging on the threshold after heavy rain. Orlando’s wet season swells the bottom rail on older fiberglass slabs that were never sealed on the underside. The fix is pulling the slab, sealing the bottom rail with marine-grade sealant, and resetting the threshold. Ignore it and the rail starts to mush-crush against the sill, which ruins the door skin.
- Gap at the top hinge corner, especially in the afternoon. West-facing doors in neighborhoods like Dr. Phillips or Winter Garden heat up all day, and the hinge-side stile relaxes just enough to sag the slab. Most of the time it’s not a frame problem; it’s a hinge block that has wallowed out and needs a reinforced plate behind it.
- Weatherstrip that’s flat and gray instead of flexible and black. Therma-Tru’s Q-Lon weatherstrip is good, but it gives up after roughly four to six years of direct Florida sun. When it loses its memory, you’ll feel air moving at the latch side and see light at the bottom corners. This is a 20-minute fix with the right profile, not a door replacement.
- A latch that rattles and catches. This usually means the strike plate on the jamb has shifted because the long screws backing the plate were installed too short or into a hollow spot. We set the strike into the king stud with 3″ screws and reset the reveal so the deadbolt throws clean with one finger.
- Condensation or fog lines inside the glass. Therma-Tru glass units are sealed assemblies. A failed seal in Orlando humidity shows up as a haze that never dries, and the fix is a replacement glass unit, not the whole door. We’ll spec the exact unit by the Therma-Tru glass code on the spacer bar.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s where your Orlando budget lands:
- Slab swap in existing frame: $950 – $1,450 installed, including new hinges, weatherstrip, threshold cap, and a re-shimmed reveal.
- Full replacement with new prehung unit: $1,600 – $2,400 installed, including interior casing, exterior caulk, and sill pan repair if the old pan is compromised.
- Door plus sidelite(s) replacement: $2,800 – $4,600, depending on glass package and whether the sidelites have operable vents.
Every job gets a written price before any work starts. That price includes the full parts list, the labor to remove and haul the old unit, and cleanup. If we find a surprise once the trim is off, we stop, show you what we found, and put the revised price in writing before we touch it. This is the Kingswell Way, and Owen Satterfield has run every Westlight job on it since 2009.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things a homeowner in Orlando can safely check: weatherstrip condition, a loose strike plate, a threshold cap that’s slipping, gaps that open and close with the weather. Those are diagnostic, not repair, but they’ll tell you what you’re dealing with before you pick up the phone.
The part we’d rather you not do alone is pulling a Therma-Tru slab off its hinges. These doors run 90 to 150 pounds depending on glass package and size. When a hinge block has wallowed, the slab can drop suddenly, and a falling fiberglass door will break toe bones before you react. The other caution: resetting a threshold means exposing the sill pan, and once that’s compromised, you’re into structural repair territory. If you’re unsure, call us at (850) 493-7894 and we’ll tell you what we think you’re actually looking at.
FAQs
A properly installed Therma-Tru door in Central Florida lasts 20 to 30 years as a slab, but the weatherstrip, threshold cap, and glass seals wear out on a much shorter cycle, usually every five to eight years. The difference between a door that dies early and one that runs long is almost always the sill pan and the hinge prep. We’ve seen 30-year-old Therma-Tru slabs in College Park that looked new until you lay a level on them.
In most cases, yes. Hinges, weatherstrip, threshold caps, glass units, and strike plates are all individual parts, and replacing one bad part is usually a fraction of the cost of a full swap. We’ll only recommend replacement when the slab itself is compromised, like a bottom rail that’s crushed or a stile that’s split behind the hinge. Call (850) 493-7894 for an honest take, and the estimate is free.
A slab swap in an existing frame with everything in stock takes about two to three hours, and we can usually schedule it within the same week. A full prehung replacement runs four to six hours, plus another half hour if we’re building out an older rough opening. You’ll get a committed arrival window before we start, and we show up in it.
We stock the common wear-and-fail parts on the truck: Q-Lon weatherstrip profiles, adjustable and fixed hinge sets, strike plates, threshold caps, and astragals for double doors. Specialty items like a specific glass unit or a custom sidelite gasket take us two to five days to order, and we’ll tell you that before you commit to the job. We also work with PGT, CGI, and CWS frames, so we can match most entry systems without making you wait on a third-party supplier.
