PGT Sliding & Patio Doors: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
If your PGT sliding door is dragging, sticking, or letting in a draft, the fix usually comes down to a worn roller assembly, a failing weather-strip, or a lock that has given up. In Orlando, a complete PGT-compatible sliding door panel replacement typically runs $900 – $2,400 installed depending on size and glass package, while part-level repairs like roller swaps usually land between $180 and $420. We stock common PGT roller assemblies, handles, locks, and weather seals on our trucks, so a single visit often solves it. Most owners discover the problem the slow way: the door gets harder to slide over a few months, then one day it simply won’t move without a fight.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds their sliding and patio doors across several series lines, and the parts are not always interchangeable. The most common we see in Orlando are the PGT 5500 Series (typically a builder-grade aluminum slider), the PGT 7700 Series (vinyl, with wider stiles and heavier glass packages), and the PGT WinGuard impact-rated line, which uses a completely different roller carriage and interlock system than the non-impact series. The 5500 and 7700 can look nearly identical from across the room, but their roller bodies, track profiles, and handle screw patterns are different. We identify the right part by measuring the existing roller wheel diameter (usually 1-1/4″ or 1-1/2″), checking the stile width, and reading the AAMA label etched into the corner of the glass or the frame. That label includes the PGT model code and the date of manufacture, which tells us which parts generation your door came from.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: PGT’s own replacement parts are well built and guaranteed to match, but they can take two to three weeks to arrive through a dealer. We carry select aftermarket equivalents from Prime-Line and Roto that match the PGT track profile precisely, and in most cases they install without any modification. The one place we insist on OEM or factory-spec: WinGuard impact-rated doors, because the interlocking rail and sealing system has tighter tolerances than a standard slider, and a generic part will compromise the impact rating. See the difference in person before committing to the work.
One more honest note: Westlight Windows Orlando is an independent installer and repair provider. We are not affiliated with PGT Industries, but we work on their door systems every week and we know which parts fail in the Florida climate.
Signs Your PGT Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The door is visibly hard to slide, even after you have cleaned the track. In almost every case this is a flattened roller wheel or a seized bearing. PGT’s older 5500 rollers were nylon, and after six or seven years of Orlando humidity and salt air, the bearing seizes and the wheel develops a flat spot that drags instead of rolls.
- You can see daylight around the interlock, or feel a draft near the center of the door. The interlock weather-strip on a PGT slider is a vinyl fin that dries out and loses its spring. When that happens, the two panels no longer seal against each other, and your air conditioner is working overtime while the strip does nothing.
- The handle is loose, floppy, or the lock will not throw. PGT exterior handles are pot metal, and the internal cam that drives the lock pawl wears down over time. The handle feels loose long before the lock actually fails, so if you notice play in the handle, address it before you cannot lock the door at all.
- The door jumps off the track, especially when someone pulls it too hard across the bottom. This usually means the anti-jump blocks at the top corners have cracked or come loose. On PGT sliders, those blocks are plastic and they take a beating from kids and dogs.
- You see condensation or fogging inside the glass unit. That is a failed insulated glass seal, not a frame part. PGT’s standard dual-pane units are built to handle Florida humidity, but a seal failure after ten-plus years is not unusual here, and the fix is a replacement sash or a glass unit swap, not a roller.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is what we quote in Orlando, and we put every number in writing before any work begins.
- Roller assembly replacement (one panel, both sides): $180 – $320 installed
- Handle and lock set replacement: $140 – $260 installed
- Interlock or perimeter weather-strip replacement (full door): $160 – $380 installed
- Complete sliding glass door panel replacement (non-impact, vinyl): $900 – $1,800 installed
- Complete WinGuard impact-rated slider replacement (size-dependent): $1,800 – $2,400 installed
The range is driven by door width, glass package, and whether the existing frame is square and salvageable. A 6-foot slider costs less than a 12-foot three-panel unit, and a low-e insulated glass package costs more than clear. Every quote includes the parts, the labor, haul-away of the old parts, and a written workmanship guarantee. We write the price before the work starts, and we do not revise it at the door. That is just how we operate.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely clean the track, vacuum the sill channel, and check for debris stuck under the rollers. A surprising number of sliders improve immediately with nothing more than a good vacuum and a wipe-down. But adjusting or replacing the rollers on a PGT slider is where most Orlando DIY attempts go sideways. The door panel is heavy, the roller screws are often corroded, and lifting a 150-pound panel out of its track without scratching the frame or dropping the glass is genuinely awkward. If the door is impact-rated WinGuard, do not attempt to pull the panel apart at all. The tension in the interlock and the weight of the glass make it a two-person job with proper lifting cups. Call us at (850) 493-7894 and we will handle it in one visit, with the part on the truck.
FAQs
In the Orlando climate, expect seven to ten years out of a set of nylon PGT rollers and ten to fifteen out of steel roller assemblies. Humidity, salt air, and daily use all shorten that. If the door is used dozens of times a day by a family with kids and pets, we have seen nylon rollers go flat in five years. Call (850) 493-7894 and we will tell you which you have.
Most PGT sliding door problems are part-level repairs: rollers, locks, handles, and weather seals. We swap the failed component and keep the original door in service. The panel only gets replaced when the frame is bent, the glass seal has failed, or the door was never impact-rated and the homeowner wants to upgrade to WinGuard.
A routine roller or lock replacement on a standard PGT slider takes about an hour, including testing and cleanup. A full weather-strip replacement runs ninety minutes. If we are replacing an entire panel, expect half a day.
We carry PGT-compatible rollers, handles, locks, and weather seals for the 5500 and 7700 series on our trucks. WinGuard-specific parts sometimes need to be ordered, and we will tell you the lead time honestly upfront. If we have the part, we install it on the first visit. Call (850) 493-7894 and we will check stock while you are on the phone.
If your PGT slider is dragging, rattling, or leaking air, call Westlight Windows Orlando at (850) 493-7894. We will tell you what is wrong, what it costs to fix, and how long it will take, all before anything is scheduled. That is the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails. Owen Satterfield has been installing and repairing windows and doors across Orlando for years, and he would rather tell you a roller swap is all you need than sell you a door you do not.
